  • The Frenchman

Last night I went out on my first meet-the-boy-you-met-on-an-internet-dating-site date. It actually went quite well. He looks like his picture and was cute, he was nice and polite, he didn't do anything weird or try to molest me, and it was actually quite romantic in a way. He took me to a very nice restaurant right on the water, we drank wine, ate delicious Italian food, shared two deserts and then walked along the water. And he paid for dinner, which was very nice of him.

I would say the only problem was that, because of his rather heavy french accent, occasionally he was hard to understand. And, he not being a noisy American, was hard to hear sometimes in a restaurant full of noisy Americans. He also loses points for being on his Crackberry a couple times, but then again he is an investment banker who works something like 60-90 hours a week, so I guess that should be expected. And I could tell he didn't want to check it. He didn't feel the compulsion to check it constantly that most Crackberry users seem to have. He only checked it if it vibrated in his pocket.

Oh, but funny story. While we were walking along the water, I suddenly had to go to the bathroom really really badly. So we went into this little food court type place to use the bathrooms, but the women's bathroom was locked so he was like "just use the men's." And I did. First time I've ever used a men's bathroom... There was definitely a guy in there too who I probably startled. Haha.

So all in all, it was a good night. I am very reassured that internet dating isn't a guaranteed disaster. Now I guess let's see if he calls.

I'm meeting internet boy #2 on Sunday probably, and I will once again post about it here.

I'm supposed to meet J for the first time next month. Every time I think about it, I feel sick and nervous.

How did you feel the first time you met a guy from the internet in person? Really, I have no idea what I will do when I first see him. Do I hug him or what? I've known him for three years and still, I'm freaking out about the whole thing.

@LongDistanceDread - Wow, that is nerve-wracking. This was my first time meeting someone (romantically) whom I had met online, and we had only been exchanging messages for about a week, so i really can't say what you should do. I would hug him if you've known him for three years. But please please keep in mind that even though you've known him for three years on the internet, he may be very different in person or he may not be who he says he is. Give someone you trust as much information as possible about your meeting. You never know who could be a predator on the other side of that computer. Not to sound paranoid... I'm just saying be safe.

    Oh, is he French?

In Europe, unisex bathrooms are not as big a deal as they are here.
